The House of Mitsui commenced its business over 300 years ago when the family opened the Echigo-ya kimono store in the Nihonbashi district of Edo (currently Tokyo), where Mitsui Fudosan's group headquarters complex stands today.
Echigo-ya's high-quality products and innovative business model proved a huge success and the family business expanded into one of the largest and diversified conglomerates by the early twentieth century, when it undertook its first real estate development project.
Following a series of structural reforms prior to and after World War II, and a continuation of innovative ventures in real estate, the Mitsui Fudosan Group now operates as a public-listed property company and a market leader in the industry.
The Mitsui Fudosan Group is an active supporter of traditional culture and the arts.
An impressive collection of Japanese cultural arts collected and preserved over three centuries by the Mitsui Family can be seen at the Mitsui Memorial Museum in Tokyo, developed by the Mitsui Fudosan Group in 2005.
